"Embrace the Pale"
Melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer caused by overexposure to UV rays, is the cause of 75 percent of cancer related deaths. These UV rays are used in tanning beds frequented by young women, and indoor tanning before 35 increases the risk for melanoma by 75 percent. In just 40 years, as long as tanning beds have existed, the risk for melanoma in women 15 to 29 years old has doubled. While the practice of tanning seems to be starting younger, the longer one continues to tan, the greater the risk of death at a young age.

Profile Piece
An assignment for a magazine writing class of a profile piece written in the style of an established magazine, chosen by the student. Choosing a men's fashion magazine seemed like the perfect challenge for me, as a fashion minor in primarily women's fashion. I interviewed Jonathan Leverett, an aspiring men's fashion designer.

"The Nøkken"
A nøkken, or nixie, were shapeshifting water spirits in Germanic folklore. Although they were common to the stories of all Germanic peoples and best known from Scandinavian folklore, their sex, bynames, and various transformations vary geographically. This story focuses in particular on the Scandinavian counterpart of the German nix, a malevolent male water spirit that uses his ethereal music to entrance women to their doom. The plot of the story is based on an old legend from the Swedish forest of Tiveden about the nøkken living in the depths of Lake Fagertärn.

"The Leper King"
A fictional twist on a historic battle, this story follows the Knights Templar on one of their greatest victories of the Crusades, the Battle of Montgisard. Through the eyes of Gautier, a fictional Knight Templar and protector of King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, the reader will experience what it was like fighting alongside some of Christianity's greatest crusaders.

"Carmilla Continued..."
An assignment for an English class to write an epilogue for the assigned text: Carmilla, a Gothic novella by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, about a female vampire named Carmilla, who preys on a young girl in her childhood. In my epilogue, Laura's story picks back up 12 years later, when she returns to the scene of Carmilla's death with her husband for closure on her terrifying experience as a child. Carmilla is significant because it was published 26 years before Bram Stoker's Dracula.
